Event 2: Engaging and Activating Youth in ECoC

The second meeting of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) partner network, held on December 6, 2024, highlighted the pivotal role of young people in shaping innovative cross-border initiatives and emphasized the importance of their involvement in cultural and social projects, the sharing of best practices from past and upcoming ECoCs, and addressing challenges to ensure their active participation.

Key Highlights of Youth Engagement

  1. Innovative Engagement Methods
Projects such as POPRI, led by the Primorska Technology Park (both nationally and internationally), have enabled young people to develop entrepreneurial and soft skills through workshops, mentorship, and competitions. Through these activities, youth gained practical experience in transforming business ideas into business models and skills to effectively tackle future challenges. POPRI website
  2. Successful Initiatives from Previous ECoCs
    • Tartu 2024 involved young people in event organization and leadership training, which boosted their motivation and created ambassadors for future projects.
    • Bodø 2024 allocated funding for youth projects and included young people in decision-making processes, leading to creative solutions and improved demographic trends.
  3. Lessons from Matera 2019
Youth had access to cultural events under favorable conditions and participated in projects such as “Heritage in Game” and “19 Schools x 19 Archives.” These programs encouraged cultural engagement and creativity.
  4. Future Initiatives: Nova Gorica 2025
    • Project XCenter is designed as a hub for youth engagement through workshops, youth parliaments, and cultural events.
    • The need for long-term support and motivation for youth to adopt new technologies and integrate into cultural and social life was emphasized.

Conclusions and Recommendations

  • Networking and Partnerships: Collaboration with schools, youth organizations, technology parks, and businesses is crucial for the sustainable involvement of young people.
  • Motivation and Mentorship: Mentors should inspire youth and tailor methods to their interests, focusing on experimentation and learning through experience.
  • Long-Term Strategies: Youth involvement must be continuous and start several years before project implementation.
  • Fostering Creativity: Encouraging creativity among youth by connecting arts, technology, and entrepreneurship.

At the event, it was emphasized that young people are key to the success of ECoC initiatives, bringing fresh ideas and innovative approaches that enrich the cultural and economic development of the region.
